There are 6 ski fields within close proximity, picturesque golf courses and many adventure activities to choose from. There is bungy jumping, paragliding and jetboating , to name a few.

Getting to Queenstown is very easy. The international airport is 10 Km from the centre of town and shuttles operate regularly from there. If you prefer to drive it is only 6 hours from Christchurch, 3.5 hours from Dunedin and 2.5 hours from Invercargill. The scenery is superb but do bear the winter conditions in mind and check with the AA. Chains should be carried. In and around Queenstown accommodation is readily available but it pays to book early.

Winter starts on 1 June and until the spring in September you can expect temperatures that range from well below zero to a maximum of 8 degrees Celsius. This is the ideal environment for winter sports. Both the Coronet Peak and The Remarkables ski fields are expecting a bumper ski season this year as they prepare to open on the 4th and 18th June respectively. They have had some good snow falls and the cold weather is perfect for snowmaking which is due to start soon. The trails are all prepared and staff members are excited about welcoming the first skiers and snowboarders to the slopes.

Skiing in the area ranges from ideal for beginners to highly technical. For a trip to remember for both skiers and boarders you can try heli-skiing and find private pristine powder slopes. For those wishing to improve there are skilled instructors at the ski fields ready to help you get the most out of your time in the snow.

The famous Queenstown winter festival runs from the 24th June to 3rd July and about 45 000 people are expected to join in the festivities. It has been a feature on the Queenstown calendar since 1975 and has evolved into what many consider to be the biggest party in the Southern Hemisphere. There will be activities for everyone both on the mountain and in the town.

Another pressure on Queenstown accommodation is the Rugby World Cup which is a huge event on New Zealand’s calendar this year. It runs from 9th September to 23rd October. Queenstown is centrally located in the South Island and is a very pleasant place to spend a few days between matches. Ireland, England, Romania and Georgia will be training in Queenstown in September.

Consider booking your Queenstown accommodation within walking distance of the town centre for your convenience. It is an ideal town to explore on foot as most of the bars, restaurants and shops are in close proximity to one another. Queenstown accommodation is available for all budgets and needs ranging from backpackers to luxury apartments. If you want to make sure that you get the accommodation that suits both your needs and your budget you will need to book early as demand is likely to be high this action packed winter.
